Healthcare providers understand that early detection saves lives, yet gaps in preventive care continue to endanger our patients. The Crowns Project, a nonprofit dedicated to prostate cancer awareness and men's health issues, is leading an effort to encourage conscientious Ohioans to contact their representatives about moving House Bill 33 out of committee for a floor vote and Governor DeWine's signature.
HB 33 represents a critical step toward healthcare equity, beginning to address disparities in Ohio's approach to cancer screening. Ohio House Bill 371 removed age limitations for mammograms, providing coverage for screening regardless of age or risk factors, while HB 33 takes the first step by mandating coverage for high-risk prostate cancer screening at age 40. This nonpartisan legislation acknowledges that African American men and those with family histories need earlier screening access—a medical reality that transcends political boundaries.
